A MadMapper Youth Summer Camp

Shaping Light: A MadMapper Youth Summer Camp is an immersive, hands-on program designed for youth ages 13-16 who are curious about digital art, design, and creative technology.

Led by Winnipeg-based artist jaymez, this two-week experience introduces participants to the exciting world of projection mapping, where light, motion, and imagination transform everyday surfaces into living works of art.

Throughout the camp, participants will:

  • Learn the fundamentals of projection mapping using MadMapper
  • Create original motion graphics including animated text, shapes, and textures
  • Explore storytelling, aesthetics, and the cultural impact of media art
  • Experiment with mapping onto physical surfaces
  • Collaborate with peers on a shared projection project
  • Develop and present a final piece for a public showcase
  • No prior experience is required, just curiosity and creativity.

What Participants Will Learn

  • Basics of projection mapping and media art
  • Introduction to motion graphics and animation loops
  • Creative coding concepts and visual composition
  • Technical skills in mapping, syncing, and playback
  • Collaboration and creative problem-solving
  • Presentation and storytelling through digital media

Participants are encouraged to bring in their own laptops.

Program Schedule Overview

Week 1: Foundations & Exploration

Participants will be introduced to projection mapping history, MadMapper software, and motion graphics creation. Through guided exercises and creative play, they will begin developing their own projects.

Week 2: Creation & Showcase

The second week focuses on refining technical skills, collaborating with peers, and completing individual projects, leading to a final public showcase for family and community.

Final Showcase

On the final day, participants will present their projection mapping projects in a public showcase. Friends, family, and community members are invited to experience the work and hear directly from the artists about their creative process.

With a diverse background in visual art, dance, theatre, opera, and music, jaymez brings a unique and multifaceted approach to design, refined over nearly two decades of professional practice. He has worked as a production designer, crafting dozens of lighting, video, and sound designs for a wide array of directors, choreographers, artists, and musicians. His artwork and designs have garnered international recognition across multiple continents, a solo exhibition and two Winnipeg Theatre Awards. Sasha Kucas

Sasha Kucas

Sasha Kucas (she/her) is a second-generation Canadian with Croatian ancestry, a writer, and a lens-based artist. Kucas' academic career reflects her commitment to life-long learning. Her path began in architecture, progressed to fine arts and dance, and led to a theatre degree specializing in production and design from the University of Winnipeg. She received a Post-Baccalaureate in Education at the Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, BC and a Fine Arts degree with Distinction from the University of Manitoba. Kucas has transitioned from teaching to working in the Arts sector. At VPMAC, she will combine her passion for education and art and is super excited to be a part of developing the Education Program.
