Catalogue Spotlight: July 2026

Elemental ⋆˚꩜。⋆

Hello VP Website and Newsletter readers,

For July's spotlight I’ve gathered together four films that highlight the power and beauty of the elements: Small Fires by Nic Wilson, Collapsing Wave Function by Tyson Houseman, a beaten path by Natalie Baird and Toby Gillies, and August by Sharon Alward.

More specifically, I chose these works because they showcase how the elements interact and intertwine, creating a sense of wholeness and balance. One element does not exist without the others.

Taking things one step at a time,

Small Fires by Nic Wilson, 2022

Small Fires (2022) is a real-time video of a bouquet of flower-shaped candles burning until they extinguish themselves. There is an essay about the mythology and use of candles embedded in the subtitle track.

Collapsing Wave Function by Tyson Houseman, 2025

Instructions for time travel.

Created from footage gathered at various artist residencies in the northeastern part of north america (Vermont Studio Center, VT, MacDowell, NH, Wassaic Project, NY). Collapsing Wave Function is a reflection on alternative forms of plant consciousness, non-linear depictions of land, and plant dreaming as interpreted through perpetual video feedback loops.

a beaten path by Natalie Baird and Toby Gillies (2025)

a beaten path by Toby Gillies and Natalie Baird, 2025

“A beaten path” is a study of urban prairie plant-life living between the cracks – thistles, burdock, plantain, etc – that spent the summer flourishing in surface parking lots and burned out demolition sites. A looping and constant push forward creates interconnecting cycles of growth and death of these creatures and spaces.

August by Sharon Alward, 2001

A ritual of grief and expiation, August looks to the sky  as a means to connect to  the infinity of creation and  the  source of awareness. Mystics believe that the awareness of this unity may be sufficient to carry us through our most difficult times. The artist reflects on her  past  as she contemplates  her  impending mortality.
