pleasurefiles

VUCAVU.EDU showcases multiple queer feminist works from the VP catalogue in their educational program Pleasure Files: Queer & Feminist Joy in the Canadian Video Archive:

  • Domestic Bliss by Wendy Geller
  • Super by Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan
  • Colonization: The Second Coming by Theo Jean Cuthand

"Spanning the late 1980s to the mid-2010s, this program playfully explores feminist ideas around sexuality, bodies, domesticity, childhood, and feminism itself. At a time when our world seems like no fun at all, these works remind us that there is joy to be found in feminist resistance and in leading a (queer) feminist life; killjoys can be joyful, too. And, while there is much to learn from these works, we must also remember that feminists are not a monolith and that, if some things remain the same, a lot has changed since these works were produced. While this program encourages students and educators to take these videos seriously, it also hopes to generate important critiques and/or interrogations about what it means to be a feminist, and what it means to be queer, in Canada, then and now."

This program is available to those with a VUCAVU.EDU subscription or for a limited-time rental.

Logo for SALT Beyoğlu

SALT Beyoğlu is screening Anthology for Fruits and Vegetables by Dawn George at This Porous Earth in the Faces of the Earth shorts program on July 11th. The program was curated with SALT in collaboration with filmmaker Yavuz Gözeller, founding director of Istanbul Experimental.

"--the selection focuses on the intimate relationship between the surface of film and the surfaces that make up the living world. It explores how plants, fruits, minerals, and landscapes become part of the film material itself through various photochemical and cameraless techniques.

Textures of bark, leaves, vegetal pigments, and sunlight appear not only as subjects to be recorded, but as elements that transform the image from within. Moving between microscopic textures and imagined landscapes, the films blur the boundaries between representation and material contact. Together, they reveal cinema as a porous surface where light, vegetation, and chemistry become inseparable."
