MATR 2027 - Call for Submissions

Application Deadline: August 30, 2026

Welcome to MATR 2027!

Video Pool Media Arts Centre is pleased to announce our upcoming Media Art + Technology Residency (MATR). MATR specifically supports experimental, independent, technology-based works and we welcome member submissions that focus on a large variety of mediums, approaches, and aesthetics.

MATR provides artists with the opportunity to investigate, experiment, and create work in direct response to the gallery's intimate scale and distinctive characteristics. The selected artist(s) will have up to two months to develop and install a new project, or adapt and transform an existing work, for presentation in the Poolside Gallery, with one month of dedicated access to the gallery space itself.

For this year's call, we want to know what you make, why you make it, and what you want to make at VP. We're looking for proposals that speak clearly to your practice: the questions, materials, or ideas that drive your work, and how that work might grow, shift, or take new form within Poolside Gallery. We're especially interested in expansive proposals, work that pushes past the gallery's four walls to engage its surrounding spaces (hallways, windows, projection wall) or that reimagines what the gallery itself can hold.

The residency supports experimental, independent, and technology-based artistic practices. We welcome proposals from artists working across a broad range of media, disciplines, approaches, and aesthetics, including video, sound, installation, digital media, performance, interactive technologies, expanded cinema, and interdisciplinary practices.

Residents will receive full access to VP's available equipment, facilities, and technical resources throughout the residency period. Applicants are encouraged to review the equipment and facilities available through VP before submitting their proposal.

VP is particularly interested in projects that engage technology as a creative, critical, aesthetic, or socio-political tool. Priority will be given to artists from equity-seeking communities whose practices contribute to the advancement of experimental media arts.

The selected artist will receive an artist fee of $2,250 CAD, which includes the residency period and the subsequent exhibition in the Poolside Gallery.

We invite artists to submit a proposals that speak clearly to your practice, research interests, and how they intend to engage with the Poolside Gallery space.
