This month's spotlight is inspired by its name sake, Cyber Sigilism, a divisive art style that blurs lines between the organic, the occult, the abject, and the technological. I’ve curated a group of three works that explore the topic of connection through the use of tech and symbolism: Virtual Spectres by Sarah Boo, CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome) by Freya Björg Olafson, and Çås¢a∂ing €®r0r Win∂0ws by erψn temp3st.
These works press up against the black mirror, utilizing tech to expose human fears and desires.

Virtual Spectres by Sarah Boo, 2022
Virtual Spectres combines scrolling social media feeds with incomplete body scans, situating them together in 3D space. Moving patterns emerge when layers of TikTok footage are superpositioned and the silhouettes of their creators briefly occupy the same time and space, being swiped together and then away. The video ruminates on our existence as cyborgs in a state of the in-between and everywhere. How does it feel to have body-consciousness that is stretched between macro spaces and virtual spaces, duplicated between flesh organs and corporately owned data centers across the world?
CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome) by Freya Björg Olafson, 2010
CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome) is part of my AVATAR series exploring methods of creating, validating and disseminating one’s identity through the use of technology and the Internet. The series is inspired by the mantra “I post therefore I am”, whereby Internet users legitimize their existence by documenting their lives and uploading this media to personal webpages and blogs. The work in this series facilitates an inquiry into our desire to share and publicize our lives. CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome) layers composited screen captures of rapid web searches, desktop strippers and amorphous dancers seductively drawing you into the screen.

Çås¢a∂ing €®r0r Win∂0ws is a project about love, death, connection, the future, and the afterlife. It is an exploration of artificial intelligence, human consciousness, and embodiment that troubles deeply held convictions about what it means to be alive, to be a person, and to be in conversation with another.
