In celebration of International Women’s Day this Saturday, March 8, Video Pool was excited to share three works in our collection made by incredibly talented Manitoban women.  Zuma by Sharon Alward, Super by Shawna Dempsey & Lorri Millan and Private Residence by Wendy Geller, were available online  to watch over a 48 hour period.   Thanks to everyone for watching!
Zuma by Sharon Alward
A performance ritual of grief, reconciliation and healing, Zuma explores the social construction of shadow mothers. Zuma is both a physical place and a metaphor for ambiguous loss. Witnessed and lovingly documented by Gwen Armstrong.

Super by Shawna Dempsey & Lorri Millan
What would a feminist superhero look like? Could she leap tall buildings in a single bound? Could she bend steel with her bare hands? What would her name be? And would anyone remember it? Commissioned by MAWA’s Art Building Community Symposium, performance artists Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan have created an aging superhero with unusual powers. Watch as she wrestles the notion of “super” to the ground! In light of reality TV and celebrity culture, where everyone who wants to be a superstar can be, does “super” still exist at all? The work features a spandex-clad hero and astonishing feats of bravery.

Private Residence by Wendy Geller
Geller’s accomplishment as a master videographer is exemplified in this video work she made in 1974. It was not released into distribution until 2002. We can look back at the low tech of the 1970’s and be startled to see “Private Residence” withstands the tech revolution and stands as a stark, simple and timeless art work.
