A Presentation and Artist Talk with Anna Costa e Silva and Mariana Muñoz Gomez

Terremoto, Ubisoft, and Video Pool Media Arts Centre present a screening and open studio with Anna Costa e Silva, facilitated with local curator Mariana Muñoz Gomez. Costa e Silva is currently an artist in residence in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada through Terremoto x Ubisoft, working on various projects expanding her performative and media arts practice, collaborating with Ubisoft employees. Join us for a screening of her video tremor-tentativa | tremor-attempt, and a dialogue between the artist and Muñoz Gomez as Costa e Silva presents on previous artworks and works in progress. tremor-tentativa will also screen throughout the afternoon.

Costa e Silva’s creative output includes films, installation, performance, and ephemeral experience through a lens of relational aesthetics. Her current research and projects through Terremoto x Ubisoft investigate the post-human, artificial intelligence, and emotion and connection as antidotes or salves to capitalist dystopias, with dreams as a starting point. This research stems in part from Costa e Silva’s previous “dream-listening” project, E os prédios iam ficando cada vez mais altos, e a gente não conseguia ver | And the buildings were growing taller, and we couldn’t see what was behind. This project was developed during Brazil’s 2018 elections, which resulted in a fascist government. During this tumultuous time, the artist created space for strangers to share an uninhibited and vulnerable sleep-state with her, where conversations revealed shared feelings of stress and precarity. Following And the buildings…, Costa e Silva’s art practice has continued to carry on with encounter as method, relation as basis, and liminality as potential, interested in opening space for extra-ordinary moments of daily life illustrating collective consciousnesses, anxieties, and needs in response to late capitalism.

About the Artists

Anna Costa e Silva

Anna Costa e Silva (1988, Rio de Janeiro) is a visual artist, filmmaker and teacher. Her practice derives from constructed encounter situations between people that investigate how the crossing of subjectivities might open space for the extraordinary and anti-productive, having affection as a method and medium. These processes unfold as films, installations and ephemeral experiences. Anna holds an MFA in Visual Arts by the School of Visual Arts, NY, and has won awards such as FOCO ArtRio, Bolsa Funarte and American Austrian Award. She has been nominated to the PIPA Prize twice and was a finalist for Marcantonio Vilaça Award. Among her solo shows are “Everything seems like flying” at Superfície Gallery, “Asymptotes” at Caixa Cultural and “Ether” at Centro Cultural São Paulo. Her work has been shown at BienalSur (Buenos Aires), Art in Odd Places (NY), Contemporary Art Center (Vilnius), Pivô, Casa Triângulo (São Paulo), Oi Futuro, Paço Imperial, Parque Lage, A Gentil Carioca (Rio de Janeiro), among others. She teaches ArtLife Practices at Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro.
