Video Commission Residency 2025 - Call for submissions

VCR Vol.3: Temporal Landscapes

Video Pool Media Arts Centre is excited to announce the 3rd Video Commission Residency, VCR Vol.3: Temporal Landscapes. This residency supports the creation of new experimental screen-based works, inviting submissions from artists for a single-channel video responding to the theme of Temporal Landscapes.

For this edition, we encourage artists to explore the temporal representation of landscapes through the potential of digital media. Temporal Landscapes highlights the tension between time’s transient nature and the digital medium’s capacity to manipulate and distort temporal perception.

Political and social landscapes are shaped by social media feeds, where carefully curated public personas exist within a digital realm of personal and collective bias. Social media encourages the manipulation of reality through filters, cropping, and colour adjustments, while algorithms reinforce confirmation bias and dopamine hits to produce a carefully constructed feedback loop of engagement and entertainment. Artists are invited to investigate the intersections of physical, political, social, and digital landscapes—examining degradation, transformation, and decay through found footage, video loops, and digital manipulation techniques.

By embracing the glitches, artifacts, and disruptions inherent in digital media, artists will construct layered temporal narratives that challenge conventional perceptions of time and evoke a dynamic sense of flux

We seek proposals for experimental single-channel videos (5–20 minutes). Selected artists will receive a $1,500 artist fee and for artists based in Winnipeg, we can offer access to Video Pool's facilities and equipment (valued at $1,500).

Final works will be showcased at VP’s Poolside Gallery at the end of the residency and added to Video Pool’s distribution catalogue and archive. Our distribution department promotes artists' work for exhibitions and screenings, submits to open calls, and preserves work for future programming.

To apply, submit a brief project description, CV, and recent or related work via the application form on our website
