Catalogue Spotlight:

January 2026

Welcome to VP Distribution's January 2026 Catalogue Spotlight!

Welcome, VP newsletter and website readers, to 2026! I hope that you’ve all had a wonderful holiday season, and that you’ve come into the new year as invigorated as we are for the 2026 season.

Moving into the new year, we are often encouraged to share new years resolutions—goals we hope to achieve, old habits we wish to break. I'll be honest, though, it’s been a toughie for me in the past to come up with long-term achievable goals to reach in the course of a year...

I remember back in high school one of my favourite teachers (shout-out to Mr. G) told us to ditch the idea of new years resolutions completely. He instead encouraged us to consider new years revolutions. Since being introduced to this idea over a decade ago, I have thought about it year after year. What does a revolution in a year look like? Is it a cycle, a return, or a riot, a complete dismantling? How can we be better members of the villages we occupy?

To celebrate the new year I’ve curated group of rowdy films that challenge systems and inspire positive change, each with a unique sense of humour, bravery, and compassion.

I hope these films inspire you, as they have inspired me, and that you have a very lovely 2026!

Just Dandy by Theo Cuthand, 2013

Cuthand explores the relationship between colonization and ecology in this experimental short.

Invited to speak at an Indigenous Revolutionary Meeting, the narrator describes an intimate encounter with an Evil Colonizing Queen which led to Turtle Island's contraction of an invasive European flora.

Group of militia members

Consideration Liberation Army by Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan, 2007

In this short Demspey and Millan release a militia of kindness and understanding. A manifesto on the benefits of genuine courtesy and connection, Consideration Liberation Army begs you to consider. "Consider repentance, consider each other, consider anything! But be forewarned, consider it now."

The Summer of Thought was unleashed upon the citizens of Winnipeg in 2007. For three months, Consideration Liberation Army agitated for unbridled thought and thoughtfulness. These insurgents communicated to the world via a website: considerationliberationarmy.ca, graffiti, and video communiqués. The leadership of the movement has since gone underground, but the video missives remain and the revolution continues.

Black and white still of a man reading a book

1919 by Noam Gonick, 1997

Noam Gonick queers the 1919 Winnipeg general strike in this experimental film, using historical fiction to centre those at the margins. 1919 is a playful and satirical reimagining of local history.

A short experimental film about the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike. The film centres on a fictional group of gay men who frequent a Chinese bathhouse, which happens to be strike headquarters. This specific site, where men from all walks of life meet for anonymous sex, becomes the point of convergence for the bloody riots. The film culminates in a reinvented ending of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike.
