With an ever-expanding array of accessible and user-friendly technology music, sound art and sound production have drastically changed over the last ten years. Tools and techniques for VR, theatre and performance have transformed the way sound artists think about sound creation. In this panel, local and visiting artists will discuss a variety of techniques and topics including generative practices, new forms of modulation, ambisonics, visual programming, as well as, mixing traditional practice with new forms.

Torres, and Derrick Woods-Morrow.

3D printing is revolutionizing how we construct and create. Originally invented to assist designers in rapid-prototyping it has become more accessible and available allowing artists to unleash their creativity in new ways. Join local makers and artists to learn about techniques, software, and challenges with the medium. How can I integrate 3D printing into my artistic practice? Where do I start? What resources are available locally? They will answer all of these questions – and more!

Sound for Performance + Installation feat. Ableton Live

This workshop will introduce participants to basic sound sequencing and composition for performance and installation. In this one day course participants will learn principles and methods of signal flow, sequencing, basic effect, MIDI composition, digital vs analog, and audio sampling.

During the workshop, participants will work together on some weird mobile app, along the way learning about various pitfalls and rabbit holes that often derail software projects, and, ultimately, seeing how collaboration is one of the keys to success.

Chloe Thompson & Matt Henderson – Moirés

Moriés is a sound-reactive audio-visual environment by Canadian sound artist Chloe Alexandra Thompson and Portland-based multimedia artist Matt Henderson. Thompson’s multi-channel sound spatialization meets Henderson’s immersive, live-rendered 3D visual landscapes in this engrossing exploration of interference patterns in sound and vision.

Hand Made Animation Tricks Show and Tell

Maryniuk will present participants with an overview and explanation of every oddball animated technique from his films. These will include: scratch, direct, light paint, paper cut out, stop motion, darkroom techniques and 70’s wedding photo tips.

Documenting Performance Art

As performance-based artists and queer women, Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan are passionate about documentation. The fine art canon neglects so many voices and practices; it is essential that we record our own. However, translating a live artwork into digital media can be fraught. What is the difference between documentation and a stand-alone work? What is appropriate to capture? How can the essence of something live be recorded? And what, in their experience, doesn’t work? A variety of examples from Dempsey and Millan and other artists will be shown. Please bring all questions.
