April Spotlight: Fool's Gold

Hello VP Newsletter and Website readers,

For this April edition of the VP Distribution Catalogue spotlight I’ve decided to put together a double feature: The Legend of Dusty Chapps by Dayna McLeod and Jill Skinner - Diary of a Star by Wendy Geller.

Both films focus on themes of persona, fame, and celebrity through the use of characterization and costume. Geller and McLeod pair their unique filmmaking styles with eccentric and satirical senses of humour, making for a duo of films that glitter like fool’s gold.

I hope you have an absolutely wondeful April filled with as many belly-laughs as you can muster,

The Legend of Dusty Chapps by Dayna McLeod, 1995

Through a combination of music, Super 8 home movies, found footage, and performance, The Legend of Dusty Chapps presents four Canadiana dreams of fame, fortune and glory in a loose documentary format. Utilizing elements of kitsch, humour, memory, nostalgia and the process of story telling, it examines how four characters deal with their own dreams.

Jill Skinner - Diary of A Star by Wendy Geller, 1985

Through multiple costume changes and by assuming multiple personas the artist deconstructs the idea of celebrity. As the videotape unfolds the costumes and personas become increasingly transparent while the environment surrounding the artist becomes more and more claustrophobic. With a darkly humorous undertone the artist examines the suffocating effects of vanity and the conflict between desire and disappointment that underlie cultural notions of celebrity.
