Julia Krolik and Owen Fernley have created award winning videos using code, projected audio responsive visuals onto gallery walls, and launched interactive web installations. In this workshop they highlight some of these projects from their data-focussed creative coding art practice. They discuss the motivation and challenges faced behind each project along with the tools used to make these projects possible.

Live coding music with Sonic Pi : An introduction to Algoraving
This workshop will introduce you to the basics of Sonic Pi, a software synthesizer which allows anyone to create music as computer code. In addition to receiving a tour of the Sonic Pi platform, you will also be introduced to the basics of programming in Ruby, a popular language for web development. DJ’s, musicians, installation artists, and anyone who wants or likes to play with synthesized audio will find this a powerful tool for creative expression.
360 Degrees of Creativity
Learn how to create immersive content with widely available 360 cameras. In this workshop, participants will learn how to write, plan, capture and edit 360-degree videos for video art, music video, documentary or fictional projects using immersive language, cameras, and softwares.
Interaction with Everyday Objects
In this workshop, we will look at how to create augmented reality experiences using Unity and Vuforia. No experience required but some unity experience is an asset. The participants will build an AR prototype during this online workshop.
Intro to Web Art with p5.js
In this introductory workshop, participants will learn some fundamental concepts for writing code to make art for the web. This workshop will provide an orientation to working with p5 and requires no previous coding experience.
Sound Recording Techniques
Video Pool Media Arts Centre has a great studio for recording with a big room, isolation booth and mixing room. Using this venue, Janell will talk about the principles of recording and the process in multi-track recording.
Circuit Playground Express
This workshop will introduce you to the basics of Python programming and embedded platforms like the Adafruit Circuit Playground Express board, which can be used to add lights, sound, and interactivity to costumes, props, and art installations. No previous experience with coding or micro-controllers is required to take advantage of what these technologies have to offer.
Anatomy of Planning a Tech/Art Project
Participants will be led through scaffolding structures designed to aid in the production of a project with an emphasis on technological considerations. This is a practical guide. Topics include collaboration, critiques, roadblocks, development, problem solving, production, exhibition, and project maintenance. Participants are welcome to bring current projects if you have them!
Spatial Audio in Virtual Reality
This workshop uses the Unity 3D game engine to spatialize 3D sound in virtual reality. The first hour of the workshop is focused on the basics of the Unity 3D user interface to ensure everyone can participate. Following that, we will learn about the Oculus Spatializer plugin which enables the spatialization of sound for virtual reality. Finally we will explore animating the sound position and the properties of spatial sound like distance fall off, reverb, and environment reflections.
AR 4 artists
In this workshop, we will look at how to create web-based augmented reality experiences that are free, open-source and don’t require users to download an app. No programming experience required, 10 lines of simple HTML code is all you need to get started. Where you go from there is up to you!
