"Toronto Queer Film Festival" in alternating maroon and white text on a pink background

Toronto Queer Film Festival is screening Lesbian National Parks and Services by Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan in the Over The Garden Wall program on October 16th.

"Join us on a magical journey of self-discovery through the dark, damp woods and treacherous terrain inhabited by queer friends, lovers, spectral voices, and park rangers alike. Enter landscapes both hyperlocal (shout outs to Hamilton, Ontario) and fantastic (your vampire bestie’s girlfriend, aka the moon) to question nature and what is allowed to be natural. Through an abundance of humour and sensory details, these films ground us in our bodies and encourage us to reclaim the environments often policed by malicious forces, both supernatural and real life.

After the screening, we’ll sit down with the eponymous filmmakers and stars of Gabby and Eleanor Go Up and Down the Mountain to chat about bike (mis)adventures, scraped hands, and inside jokes."

tiff-2019

TIFF Cinematheque is screening Stain by Hope Peterson in This is the Feminist Archive: The Public Gaze on October 25th. The program features an introduction by the founder of This is the Feminist Archive, Marusya Bociurkiw, and fellow guest programmer Lexie Corbett, with a Q&A following the screening.

"For the past two years, This is the Feminist Archive has brought Canadian films and videos by women from the late 20th century out of the vault, repositioning them as future-oriented archives: what will be seen to have been. Many of these works invent avant-garde strategies and engage in intersectional interrogations. This programme looks at women negotiating public space and identity through narrative and experimental works made between 1988 and 1999. The filmmakers take on the camera’s gaze — in the street, the Rez, the nation — from crossing borders as a South Asian lesbian to eating cupcakes in public. As women’s, BIPOC, and queer bodies face renewed regulation, these bold, playful works feel surprisingly — and perhaps urgently — current."

What Colour is the Sacred promo poster

Gallerie Buhler's exhibition What Colour is the Sacred runs from September 17th from 6-9pm. The show features a selection of works curated by hannah_g, including opwêyakatâmêw by Tyson Houseman and August by Sharon Alward.

"What is the sacred’s hue, texture, form? How is it perceived and expressed through art? A wonderfully alive quality of the sacred is that it refuses tethers—a quality shared by great art. In this group exhibition, the art works hold the potential to tell us something about where the sacred might be found, whether this is outside ourselves or within.

Now Introducing to the Catalogue...

ghosts-still by kaya joan

Ghosts along the shoreline by Kaya Joan

Ghosts along the shoreline experiments with layering videos taken along the edge of the St. Lawrence River, to produce speculative, transitory landscapes emerging from processes of accumulation and distortion. Images of bodies and land extracted from a geography textbook published in 1905 for schools in Ontario, surface like spectres against shifting terrains, briefly appearing before disappearing again, glitching, mutating, and evading capture.

VCR

Ghost salong the shoreline was made through VPMAC's Video Commission Residency. The work premiered alongside Biologically Disconnected by Herlinda Dalayoan and Kiss the Wound by Christian Hajjar at VPMAC's Poolside Gallery on Sept 18th in VCR VOL. 4: ATTRITION.

Congrats to each of the artists on completing and exhibiting these fantastic works!
