Valeri Marina - AIR 2022

Scott Leroux Fund for Media Arts Exploration 2022 Recipient

Please Welcome Valeri Marina to VP's Scott Leroux Residency Program!

It is our pleasure to announceĀ Valeri Marina as the 2022 recipient of the Scott Leroux Fund for Media Arts Exploration (SLFMAE). In memory of Scott Leroux and supported by the Leroux family, the SLFMAE is an annual, month-long residency focused on the research and exploration of a specific technology and related aesthetic approaches. This year the residency is focused on SOUND ART.

About Valeri:

Valerie's work revolves around the exploration of sound from her migrant journey and the experiences that have crossed her. Her curiosity for listening led her to migrate from the Andes Mountains in Bolivia to Mexico (2010) and currently Canada. She has walked the paths of sound experimentation, radio, and film, exploring topics such as ecology, politics, spirituality and multisensoriality.

SLFMAE Research

While in residence, Valeri plans to conduct cartographic and sonic research around The Forks, exploring it's present day attributes and its relationship with the history of the area. Valeri will be working with various field recording / sonography techniques and approaches and exploring its sonic interpretation in VP's multi-channel audio suite. Her goals of the residency are to explore the connections between current and previous research work, and draw continuity between them:

On the one hand, with the call La Voz del Agua (Chile, 2021), a space for oral experimentation and collective writing carried out together with several Latin American women. And then from the diploma course ''From the Audible to the Aural: The sound turn in the Social Sciences'' that provided me with several theoretical-methodological tools that allow me to pose problems and develop socio-acoustic research projects.

For her public component, Valeri plans on allowing her research to dictate a suitable format for sharing and will work with VP to develop a sharing methodology before the end of her research. Stay tuned!

This year's SLFMAE has been made possible through the generous donations from Janice + Doug Leroux and family, and from Sean and Wendy Post.
