We’re seeking submissions from artists for The Scott Leroux Fund for Media Arts Exploration (SLFMAE).

The Scott Leroux Fund for Media Arts Exploration (SLFMAE) is an annual residency focused on research and exploration.

SLFMAE offers $2000 for a two-month residency exploring a specific technology and related aesthetic approaches.

This is a site-specific research-based residency of VP’s A/V Adventure Lab.

This media arts residency focuses on exploring and researching analog-focused A/V systems as a realm of experimental potential. Instead of emphasizing the creation of new works, the program invites artists to engage with the distinctive characteristics of analog A/V systems, embracing tactile processes, material qualities, and inherent unpredictability.

This residency provides a flexible framework for creative exploration, encouraging the Artist-in-residence to investigate the technical, aesthetic, and conceptual possibilities of analog A/V. It provides an opportunity to deconstruct and reimagine the medium, uncovering its capacity to distort, fragment, and reshape perceptions of time, space, and reality.

In keeping with the spirit of the Scott Leroux fund's focus on exploration and research, VP's ACCESS A/V residency provides up to five artists with 60 hours of self-directed access to the analog-focused Adventure Lab. This program expands our commitment to research, experimentation, and sustained engagement with technologies, prioritizing process driven exploration over the production of finished works. ACCESS A/V emphasizes direct, hands-on engagement with analog and digital A/V systems such as modular synthesis and analog video. Sustained access allows artists to explore material, technical, and aesthetic possibilities at their own pace. Artists are invited to propose a project through the guidelines below.

This residency emphasizes direct, hands-on use of analog and digital A/V systems (modular synthesis, analog video) rather than the completion of finished works. You guide your own process, using sustained studio access to experiment with the material, technical, and aesthetic qualities available in the Adventure Lab.

What the residency includes
• Introductory workshop to the Adventure lab. Four hours. Valued at $150.
• Sixty hours of access to the A/V Adventure Lab (valid for 2 years). Valued at $960.
• One open studio program for Access A/V residency recipients to share processes, experiments, and works in progress (TBD).

The analog video system is made to be flexible in routing, so that mixer ins / outs can be routed in a loop or to other mixers, and finally to the monitors and computers for capture. The system will also accept input for cameras, legacy tape decks (VHS, Umatic, Beta), which are all available as well.

Requirements

Recipients must complete the Adventure Lab workshop before accessing the studio.
Recipients must hold a valid CPU membership at Video Pool Media Arts Centre. Your membership must remain active for the full access period.

The Access Residency prioritizes access to specialized tools and supports artists seeking sustained time to work with analog A/V as an experimental medium.

VP’s analog video system is a routable patchbay system of vintage video mixers, monitors and decks, with a computer for capture. Additional peripheral inputs are available for cameras, additional legacy tape decks (VHS, Umatic, Beta), and a modular synth

VP’s fully stacked Modular Synth Unit features almost every major module from Intellijel. These units connect via small patch cables to produce bleeps, bloops, noise, soundscapes - if you can imagine it, this machine can do it. The unit also houses the LZX Double Vision - a compact, but super powerful video mixer that accepts signals from the modular synth, meaning you can add CV in/out to your video. All these Units connect to each other, and can be routed in and out of themselves.

Scott Leroux was a unique and creative force during the time he spent making artwork at VP. He had boundless energy and an ability to bring people together around his and others’ acts of expression. Suddenly, and sadly, Scott passed away on October 29, 2016. VP is honoured to continue his legacy through a fund created by the Leroux family in Scott’s name.
