The Analog Rebellion: Old Tech, New Possibilities

VHS • CRTs • Overhead Projectors • Cassette Tapes • DIY Electronics Why are artists returning to analog technology? Explore sustainability, repair culture, creative experimentation and alternative software approaches to our digital future.

As digital platforms become increasingly automated, commercialized, and algorithm-driven, many artists are rediscovering the value of slower, tactile, and more intentional technologies.

From VHS and CRT monitors to overhead projectors, photocopiers, cassette tapes, and DIY electronics, analog media is finding new life in contemporary creative practice. This discussion explores why artists are returning to older technologies, how analog tools intersect with sustainability and repair culture, and what more ethical alternatives exist to today's dominant digital platforms.

Can looking backward help us imagine a healthier technological future? All artists and makers who are finding innovative ways to create with yesterday's tools are welcome!

More about the Tech-Forward Art Dialogues 2.0

In 2024, Video Pool Media Arts Centre (VP) launched the Tech-Forward Art Dialogues (TAD) series to listen. We asked artists, educators, and community members what they needed from VP and where media arts should go next. Those conversations helped shape new education initiatives, partnerships, and programming.

Now, two years later, the conversation is evolving.

The TADs turn its focus to the big questions shaping the future of media arts. Together, we'll explore timely topics at the intersection of technology, creativity, ethics, accessibility, and sustainability through community dialogue.

These aren't lectures. They're conversations we all hold about the ideas that challenge us, excite us, and sometimes keep us awake at night.
