Where do the living memories of the Assiniboine River and Red River float?

"Valeri conducted sonic artistic research in the Fall/Winter of 2022 around the Red and Assiniboine Rivers at The Forks in Winnipeg (Treaty 1 territory). The erosion marked by the flowing waters of the rivers, the directions of the currents, guided her walks and where she paused, listening for the history of The Forks, where the Assiniboine river flows into the Red river; the historic territory for trade, the arrival of the railway, and shelter to build community.

Valeri documented and recorded different meetings, conversations of all kinds of living nature, working with various field recording / sonography techniques, and exploring and interpreting the recordings in VP's multi-channel audio suite."

Please join us in VP's Poolside Gallery for an intimate opportunity to explore Valeri Marina's quadrophonic research from The Forks.

Valeri Marina

Valeri's work revolves around the exploration of sound from her migrant journey and the experiences that have crossed her. Her curiosity for listening led her to migrate from the Andes Mountains in Bolivia to Mexico (2010) and currently Canada. She has walked the paths of sound experimentation, radio, and film, exploring topics such as ecology, politics, spirituality and multisensoriality.

SLFMAE Research

While in residence, Valeri conducted cartographic and sonic research around The Forks, exploring it's present day attributes and its relationship with the history of the area. Valeri worked with various field recording / sonography techniques and approaches and exploring its sonic interpretation in VP's multi-channel audio suite. Her goals of the residency were to explore the connections between current and previous research work, and draw continuity between them:
