VP is Turning 40!

It's a Media Arts Mid-Life Crisis

We Really Are Turning 40!

On January 19th, 1983, a small collection of folks put their names on a piece of paper, making Video Pool Inc. a reality in the eyes of governments and funding bodies. Of course, we know there are signatories and historically significant moments, but we also know that histories and movements are not sudden events spawned out of nowhere, but rather the work and dedication of a multitude of individuals.

At VP, we are immensely grateful for the efforts and vision of everyone involved in this organization's development. Over the course of forty years, many incredible and committed people have put their signature on VP, steering it through new technologies, social and cultural shifts, and devoting a massive amount of time and energy to developing and supporting the local community.

We are also incredibly thankful for all the members who keep the creative juices flowing through the Winnipeg scene and who aren't afraid to navigate new ideas, push boundaries, and make weird art.

Get Involved!

We've put together a series of programs to celebrate this momentous occasion, including the upcoming MATR residency.

With our tongue firmly planted in our cheek, we are planning an entire year of activities based on the six stages of a mid-life crisis as described by Jim Conway in 1997,  including two long-term, research-focused residencies, a reactivation of our poster archive and video collection, and other goodies and surprises.

According to Conway, the six stages of a mid-life crisis are:

  1. Denial
  2. Anger (VP says Passion)
  3. Replay
  4. Depression (VP says (de)PRESS(i)ON)
  5. Withdrawal
  6. Acceptance

We are currently IN DENIAL while we gather materials and supports for the upcoming celebration... stay tuned and stay in touch!
