Projection Mapping Bootcamp for Art Teachers

Bring projection mapping into your classroom.

Shaping Light: Projection Mapping Bootcamp for Art Teachers is a hands-on, two-day professional development experience designed to give educators the tools, confidence, and ready-to-use lesson plans to teach projection mapping right away.

Presented by Video Pool Media Arts Centre (VP), The Pivot, this intensive focuses on practical application, not technical overwhelm. Whether you’re new to digital media or looking to expand your media arts curriculum, this workshop will support you in integrating projection mapping into your teaching practice.

No prior experience required, just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.

Bootcamp Outline:

Day 1: Morning

  • What is projection mapping? (classroom relevance)
  • MadMapper essentials: Surfaces, masking, playback tools
  • Quick-start setup (projector + laptop realities in schools)

Hands-On

  • Map onto: Cardboard forms, Classroom objects
  • Use pre-made visuals (included in teacher kit)

Day 1: Afternoon

  • Intro to motion graphics (teacher-friendly tools): Canva / simple animation tools, Cavalry (a free animation tool)
  • Import playback and manipulate media in MadMapper

End of Day Outcome: Teachers create a simple mapped piece and are confident with setup + basic workflow

Day 2: Morning

  • Walkthrough of pre-built lesson plans
  • How to scaffold for: Grade 9–10 (intro), Grade 11–12 (advanced)

Hands-On

  • Teachers choose ONE lesson and build a sample student project while practicing teaching flow

Day 2: Afternoon

  • Assessment + classroom management: Rubrics, Group work strategies, Tech troubleshooting in schools
  • Final mini showcase + peer feedback

End of Day Outcome: Teachers leave with a Ready-to-teach unit and Demo project

Day 3: Optional Add-On: Practice Day/Studio Access

Registrants are welcome to come in from 1-4pm to practice what they have learnt, refine their demo projects and ask any questions they might have to jaymez.

Course Requirements:

Participants will need a computer with at least 300 MB of disk space and at least 2 GB of RAM and any GPU compatible with Open GL 3.3.

* Thanks to MadMapper, for the duration of the course, one month MapMapper Licenses will be provided for all students.

With a diverse background in visual art, dance, theatre, opera, and music, jaymez brings a unique and multifaceted approach to design, refined over nearly two decades of professional practice. He has worked as a production designer, crafting dozens of lighting, video, and sound designs for a wide array of directors, choreographers, artists, and musicians. His artwork and designs have garnered international recognition across multiple continents, a solo exhibition and two Winnipeg Theatre Awards. Sasha Kucas

Sasha Kucas

Sasha Kucas (she/her) is a second-generation Canadian with Croatian ancestry, a writer, and a lens-based artist. Kucas' academic career reflects her commitment to life-long learning. Her path began in architecture, progressed to fine arts and dance, and led to a theatre degree specializing in production and design from the University of Winnipeg. She received a Post-Baccalaureate in Education at the Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, BC and a Fine Arts degree with Distinction from the University of Manitoba. Kucas has transitioned from teaching to working in the Arts sector. At VPMAC, she will combine her passion for education and art and is super excited to be a part of developing the Education Program.
